I think the real hurtle to becoming published is "knowing a guy." As in, I know a newspaper editor or reporter...Etc. Hence the rise of places like Substack. How does, for example, a truck driver become introduced to a publisher?

TC ... Looks like you are already on the author journey and have the skills and knowledge ... but to answer the question ... believe in yourself and your writing then start learning the publishing business (More than 70 articles here and 48 years of experience).

No question it does HELP if you know people but not just Publishers (editors, illustrators, webmasters, social media managers, marketers and most IMPORTANT READERS connect with them (people with problems nonfiction or who want to be entertained fiction, education and entertainment children's books ... people who will buy your book) but TODAY with all the FREE platforms you can become your own PUBLISHER with a little help from a few knowledgable people.

Make time every day (before work, after work, days off, vacation, holidays) ... The way you meet and build a relationship with a publisher is go to writer's conferences, listen to podcasts, check the acknowledgement or dedication pages of books you like (or want to write on a similar topic) many authors thank their editors or publishers in their books, find out who publishes what you want to write (Writers & Publisher Directories or Guides found in any library or online bookstore) connect with them on social media (Linkedin) by searching publishers, then reading and commenting on their posts just like you did here (don't ask them to read your stuff until they ask for it or until you have a relationship which can take a few weeks or months) ... similar to marriage you don't ask the big question on the first date.

In the meantime become an excellent writer so someone wants to publish your work and if you want to START TODAY you become your own publisher and get your information out in 3-6-12 months instead of 2-4 years using platforms like Substack, Amazon, Ingram, Apple, Barnes & Noble and more along with a website or social media to connect with readers.

Wishing you much success in your author adventure, Liz
