Hello Fellow Writers …
Today I am feeling overwhelmed by information overload. As a life-long learner, in the past I have always loved the challenge of learning new things. Wether it was through reading, listening to a podcast or watching a livestream, webinar or educational video. I was always eager to conquer and participate.
I am finding it harder to be as enthusiastic … maybe you are feeling the same? If so let me know in the comments.
I know that I need to understand the newer social media platforms not only for myself but for my clients. I know that I should be using the new AI Tools that are available to help my productivity, marketing and sales. I know I need to be building new relationships for future endeavors.
However, for the first time in my life … I DON’T WANT TO!
I DON’T WANT TO LEARN ANY NEW TECHNOLOGIES, I DON’T WANT TO LEARN NEW PLATFORMS, I DON’T WANT TO TAKE ON NEW CHALLENGES.
It seems that every time I sit down to pursue more knowledge or to try and set up a new account of just add to an account I already have, I can’t seem to make it work. My accounts don’t exist, my passwords don’t match, I can get it on my phone but not on my computer. However, all my documents, audios and videos are on my computer not my phone so that is completely UNHELPFUL!
How am I suppose to load new posts and share quality information and host wonderful interviews with authors that I know will help people struggling with all the challenges of understanding book publishing, if I can’t get it to work and I seem to have no energy to overcome my current struggles or challenges. I want to encourage new and vintage writers so they will keep moving forward.
Then I think of my friends, partners and inspirations who are struggling with life threatening health issues and I am ashamed. They are not giving up and so I will take a leaf from their book of motivation and just keep moving, being positive and showing kindness to others.
Although I have taken a break from posting here on this substack … maybe I need to take my own advice. Take a break for a day or two or even a week or MORE! Go take a walk and smell the flowers or the crisp fall air, do something fun, sit on a patio, have a nice meal and witty conversation with friends, or visit some place I have never been before (although a do that with books every day). Then maybe I can come back with a fresh perspective and a more creative plan for the future.
I think maybe this is just a part of the process of being in business, of being a writer and of being a creative. When we are tired, unenthusiastic or feeling overwhelmed, we must take breaks to enjoy new experiences or visit old memories to refill our well so that our brain has something new or different to work with.
Let me know in the comments how you handle information overload? What strategies do you use to change your mindset. Also if you have an AI tool, social media genius or marketing strategy that has helped you enhance your writing / publishing career –– please share that as well.
See you soon … either here, on social media or even at an event if you live in North Texas.
To your writing success … Creatively, Liz
As we get older, our focus changes from what I “should” do to what do I “want” to do. This doesn’t mean you don’t love or at least like what you do, it just means your focus shifts. It’s the middle age crisis of your career. When you do something for years, after awhile it goes stale, no matter how much you love what you do. For some, minor adjustments can solve the issue. For most, a major change is needed. The remedy is to know which will reignite the flame. It’s time to take a deep dive into what really moves you and once identified, jump in with both feet. You will be re-born.
